Response to Angela Sangaki

Posted July 02, 2008

Thank you all so very much for your "mostly" thoughtful responses to my first ever blog. You all really got my meat computer (brain) working double time and now I want to address some of your concerns.

First, to Angela Sangaki, have you ever heard of evil? I am entitled to have an opinion about popular entertainment. I never said I wouldn't allow my kids to see this movie — Hamlet 2 — but I did intimate that if they did decide to see it I would probably sit behind them with an air horn and blow it in the faces when the face raping parts happened.

Is that censorship? No. It is courage. Every genocide starts with one little moment — like a movie about face raping — and then once good people stand by doing nothing, here the army comes, shoving people into showers.

I also appreciate your willingness, dear Miss Sangaki, to opine over things of which you have no knowledge. How could you possibly defend a movie that you haven't seen? Are you insane?

But look, I'm all for keeping my mind open. I would like to invite you to come and see this movie with me when it opens. And then if you are willing, I'd like to invite you to my Wednesday night book club meeting to discuss. We normally have these at my friend Siabhan's house (Persian) and the conversations are very eye opening. And dare I say, you might learn something. Like how to keep your stupid face shut about things you know nothing about!!!!

I live in Canoga Park California but I am willing to drive/fly anywhere. This is just that important.

Sometimes I worry...

Posted June 20, 2008

Sometimes I worry about the future of our country. As a mother of two teenagers and one tween — YIKES! — I try to "be down" with what they're into. And it was in this effort that I allowed myself to be recruited to see a test screening of the new movie called Hamlet 2. And I must say, after seeing this movie, I am VERY VERY WORRIED ABOUT THE FUTURE OF OUR COUNTRY!

I thought this would be a cute movie about Shakespeare but what I saw was something very different. Jokes about raping people in their faces? And sperm? Is this entertainment? Maybe I'm getting old and square but I say NO!

I did like the performances — Steve Coogan is very natural and warm and Katherine Keaner is brilliant. And actually the story about supporting the arts in schools is good too but why why why why does it have to be so crude?

I love getting involved and mixing things up. My husband, Andy says a little too much for his liking! Well, sue me. Just kidding. Anyway, I wrote a very strongly worded email to the studio of this movie, Focus Features, expressing my feelings and I got an email back thanking me and offering me a blog on their website to keep my thoughts flowing. My son Jaden thinks they're making fun of me — but I don't give a scratch. I like laughing, too. So maybe I'm making fun of them.

What ever happened to those movies like What's Up Doc? or Day of the Jackal? Those were great movies. Now everything seems to be poop jokes and face raping. I don't get it. My son Jaden and my daughter Alexandra love that show Family Guy. And that show is absolute dreck. At least South Park has something to say — even though I wish they didn't have to use the language they do to say it.

Look, I don't mean to be a scold. I love movies and I just want to open a dialogue and establish some standards of decency before our society goes straight down the crapper!

Sincerely,

Sandi Christ-Thomas
